On December 23rd 2015, Meilei and Aojie, two new sour cherry varieties, selected by Cai Yuliang, professor of College of Horticulture, and Cherry Research team of Northwest Agriculture & Forestry University, passed the examination of Shaanxi Forest Variety Approval Committee.
Meilei and Aojie are the results of seedling selection breeding of wild sour cherry and natural hybrids, which belong to amarelle species. Their fruits are sweet, sour and juicy, with intense flavor and red flesh. In addition, they can be processed into cherry juice, canned food, wine and other products. Their trees, with great economic benefits, are suitable for afforestation.
