On the morning of August 31st, after 2015 Undergraduates School Opening Ceremony & Military Training Mobilization Meeting, Li Peigen, an academician of Chinese Academy of engineering and former president of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, was invited to give the freshmen a lecture entitled “Independence, Freedom and Responsibility.”

Started with China Dream proposed by President Xi Jinping, academician Li analyzed some of the psychological problems of modern undergraduates and thus extended to the underlying reason -- the spirit of university.

He pointed out education should go back to the students, that is, leave students enough space for free development as an individual. In his opinion, education should be perceived based on the sense of human, which is supposed to be stressed. Greater space should be provided for individual’s free development, so that they could find their own gifts.
Academician Li emphasized, the core of university spirit was the spirit of independence. Students should be encouraged to uphold the flag of technology and innovation, build up scientific spirit and master scientific methods.

At last, he sent his best wishes to the freshmen, no matter what hardships or complex situations they might face, they should always be kind, reliable, sensible, independent, free and responsible and try to be a better self in the future.
