4. Honors and Awards
Since 1996, Senior Research Fellow Jianchang Mao endeavored to do crop genetics and breeding and comprehension extension of agriculture technologies. He finished the national and Shaanxi province project of extension of high yielding and high efficient technology for crops and vegetables in Meixian County, Shaanxi Province. He extended the project of intercropping of crop and vegetable and summer sweet potato in order to increase the farmer’s profit, and designed the standards of wheat-vegetable-maize, wheat-sweet potato rotation cropping systems.
He took the Shaanxi province nature science foundation and university’s special foundation "development and select methods of drought-tolerant and high yielding corn inbreeds”, and proposed a method to evaluate the drought-tolerance by roll degree of seedling leaf. During the period of 10th five, He also got national "863” high technology project "high efficient breeding technology for corn and breeding of new variety with good quality, high yield, multiple-resistance, and special purpose” and "948” project "Creation and utility of corn germplasm” from Ministry of Agriculture. During the period of 11th five, he got National Key Technology R&D Program "study and demonstration of spatial environment mutant breeding key technology of corn”, in charge of Shaanxi province’s key "13115” Science & Technology Innovation project "breeding of new corn variety and key technology research”.
He followed the principle of "develop inbreed in low density but evaluate it in high density”, he proposed a new technological procedure including development of inbreed by combination of pedigree breeding and recurrent selection in a cultivar population, and a four-spot-resonance methods to evaluate inbreeds. Specially, he made recurrent selection in a family at S3 or S4 generation. He developed two high-yielding, high combing ability inbreeds M3255and M3021, and a new variety Shaandan 972 of high-yield, early-mature, and strong comprehensive resistance. The other two new corn varieties Nongkeda No.1 and Shaandan 22 of his were also certificated by Shaanxi province.
More than forty papers of Jianchang Mao’s were published on journal such as Scientia Agricultura Sinica, Agricultural Research in the Arid Areas, Journal of Maize Sciences, and Acta Agriculturae Boreali-Occidentalis Sinica. He take part in wrote the book China Corn Varieties and Their Pedigree. He was granted an invention patent, and his two applications for invention patent and new variety protection were under examination. He got five scientific awards by now, of which, "Development and application of corn inbreeds K12 and K22 of high combing ability” got the second prize from Ministry of Education, "Development and extension of corn inbreeds K12 ,K22 and the hybrid Shaandan 902” got the first class Awards of Science & Technology progree of Shaanxi province and Yangling Agriculture Demonstration Zone, and the ten big achievements of Shaanxi province. Of some projects he took part in, "Building of comprehensive foundation of Linwei District, Weinan city” got second extension prize of Shaanxi province, "Breeding of new corn variety Shaandan 901” and "Breeding and extension of corn hybrid varity Shaanzi No.1” got second class Awards of Science & Technology progree of Shaanxi province, respectively.
