Dr. Tong-Xian Liu, known as "T.-X.”, is a National Distinguished Professor of Entomology,Fellow of Entomological Society of America (elected in 2014), located at Northwest A&F University(Yangling, Shaanxi, China).Born in Qingdao, China, he obtained his BS degree in plant protection from Shandong Agricultural University (Tai’an) in China. He completed his MS degree in entomology from Virginia Tech (Blacksburg, VA) in one and half years (1986-1987). Then, he obtained his PhD in entomology from the University of Georgia (Athens, GA) in 1982. He spent four years as a post-doc research associate at the University of Florida. He had joined Texas AgriLife Research, Texas A&M(Weslaco) in 1997 as an Assistant Professor working on vegetable IPM, and was then promoted to Associate Professor in 2001 and Full Professor in 2005, respectively. He was recruited and appointed as a National Distinguished Professor of Entomology, the most prestigious faculty position in China by the Chinese Government in 2009. Later, he was appointed as Dean, College of Plant Protection, Northwest A&F University; Special Adviser to the President; Director, Key Laboratory of Applied Entomology; and Director, Key Laboratory of Crop Pest Management in the Northwest Loess Areas of the Ministry of Agriculture of China.The amount of research funding and the numbers of publications have been more than doubled in the past four years since he has served as the dean of the college.
T.-X. has published 230 refereed journal articles in various journals, including Annual Review of Entomology, Scientific Reports, PLoS ONE, Ecological Entomology, Journal of ExperimentalBotany, Planta, BioControl, Biological Control, BioControl, and many others. He also edited 4 books, published more than 200 educational and extension papers, and has been invited to give over 100 speeches and seminars at many national and international institutions and conferences.
T.-X. has received numerous awards in various institutions and societies. In his more than 30-year career as a faculty in three universities,Dr. Liu has been very active in teaching and student training.He taught general entomology, horticulture entomology, biological control and IPM. Currently he teaches an introductory entomology class in China. He has supervised 51 doctoral students, 20 post-doctoral research associates, 37 MS students and 22 visiting scientists. Most of them have been employed in academic institutions, conducting research and teaching, and some have been working in the pest management industries. Some have become professors, leading researchers, leaders (including deans, department heads, presidents of professional societies), and are very active in their profession.
T.-X. has served in several capacities including the President of the International Branch, Entomological Society of America in 2013. He has co-organized more than 20 symposia worldwide and assumed approximately 20 roles in various scientific societies worldwide.
