The College of Chemistry & Pharmacy
Launched on December 30, 2016, the College of Chemistry & Pharmacy of Northwest A&F University was originally the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering affiliated to the College of Science, even the former Chemistry Faculty of National Northwest Agriculture and Forestry College founded in 1934. The department started its postgraduate program since 1987 and undergraduate ones from 1999 on. The college has three departments, namely Department of Chemistry, Department of Chemical Biology, and Department of Pharmacy.
Adhering to schooling guidance of moral cultivation and civil education, reform and innovation, serving the society, and following the idea of "high starting, high standard, high level and international outlook”, the college will identify the point of integration of chemistry and pharmacy, pursue breakthroughs in new leading molecule discovery, new target protein analysis and new mechanism to promote innovative drug R&D, transform scientific and technological achievements and cultivate high-end talents, ultimately to build a domestically first-class, internationally renowned research-oriented institute.
The college has an admission of 775 students at present, including 485 undergraduates, 209 postgraduates, and 81 doctoral students. With 1 provincial teaching team, 1 national quality course, 1 provincial excellent course, and 2 courses taught in English, the college has won 1 special prize and 1 first prize of Shaanxi Provincial Teaching Achievement Award, and 1 Excellent Textbook of Shaanxi Province. Project"Eternal Rose” was awarded the 2015 National Undergraduate Micro-Entrepreneurship Gold Award, and one student of Applied Chemistry Major, Ma Chongwen,Class 2013, was selected as one of the National Top 100 College Entrepreneurial Heroes of the Year 2015.
The college has 2 undergraduate programs, Applied Chemistry and Chemical Biology, 2 first-level MS programs, Chemistry and Pharmacy (academic and professional), 1 second-level MS program of Chemical Biology, and 1 PhD program of Chemical Biology.
The college has 4 research institutes, including the Key Laboratory of Natural Products & Chemical Biology (Shaanxi Province), the Research Center of Traditional Chinese Medicine Fingerprint(Shaanxi Province), the Research Center of Resource Chemistry and Sustainable Utilization Engineering (Shaanxi Province), and the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center of Chinese Medicine Fingerprint. There is 1 Shaanxi University Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center in Chemistry, 52 teaching and research laboratories, 11,000 m2 area of teaching and research, more than 20 sets of advanced large-scale analytical test instruments, and about 2,000 sets of various instruments.
Among the 126 faculty members including 102 full-time teachers are 26 professors, 46 associate professors, over 20 doctoral supervisors and 50 master's supervisors, 1 double-hired academician, 1 national outstanding young science fund winner, 1 selected scholar of "the Research Funding Program for Outstanding Young Teachers in Higher Education Institutions”, 6 selected scholars of "the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University of Ministry of Education of China”, and 1 Distinguished Teacher of Shaanxi Province, 1 Distinguished Professor of "houji scholars”, 2 selected scholars of "100 Talents Plan” of Shaanxi Province, and 2 youths honored Shaanxi province science and technology new star. More than 90% of the faculty members have doctoral degrees, and more than 50% have overseas learning and exchange experience.
In the past five years, the college has undertaken more than 120 scientific research projects including National Natural Science Foundation of China, and published over 500 SCI papers in famous academic journals such as Chem. Rev., Chem. Soc. Rev., Angew Chem Int Ed, and J. Am. Chem. Soc, in which highest impact factor reached 46.57, and 2 were selected as ESI highly cited papers. The college has also won 1 Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of Ministry of Education and 35 patents. The chemistry discipline entered the top 1% of ESI's global rankings in November 2016, and ranked 51st among national universities in the 2016 natural index rankings and the 1st in agriculture and forestry colleges.
The college has actively carried out exchanges and cooperation at home and abroad, and has signed joint educational agreements with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the University of Maryland, McGill University in Canada, the University of Göttingen, the University of Queensland, and the Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
