Dr. David C. Nielsen, Research Agronomist with the Central Plains Research Management Unit located at the Central Great Plains Research Station in Akron, retired on July 2 after nearly 35 years with the Agricultural Research Service.

Nielsen grew up on a diversified crop and livestock farm in north-central Iowa. He became interested the relationship between weather and crop production during his teenage years and subsequently earned a B.S. in Meteorology from Iowa State University. He then continued his studies at ISU and earned aMaster's degree in Agronomy with an emphasis in Agricultural Climatology. From ISU, Nielsen went to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and studied at the Center for Agricultural Meteorology and Climatology (CAMaC) and earned a Ph.D. in Engineering (Bioenvironmental Option) with an emphasis in Agricultural Meteorology.
