About NWAFU



Northwest A&F University is a key national comprehensive university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education. As one of the leading universities in China, NWUAF is supported by Ministry of Education's "Project 985" and “Project 211”. The University is located in Yangling, Shaanxi Province, the birthplace of Chinese Agricultural civilization and today’s the National Agriculture High-tech Industrial Demonstration zone. Current Party Secretary is Li Xingwang, President Sun Qixin.


The University originated from National Northwest Junior College of Agriculture and Forestry which was founded in 1934, and other research and educational institutes that were later founded in Yangling. In September 1999, approved by the State Council, seven teaching and scientific research institutions, namely Northwest Agricultural University, Northwest Forestry College, Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Northwest Institute of Water Resources Science, Shaanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shaanxi Provincial Academy of Forestry, and Northwest Institute of Botany merged and became today’s Northwest A & F University.


The past eighty years since the university’s establishment has witnessed  generations of its faculty and students adhering to the educational philosophy of “managing state fundamentals, solving civilian livelihood, and respecting scientific research” and practicing the University motto of “Sincerity, Simplicity, Bravery and Perseverance ”. We give prime concern to our nation and people; we inherit Hou Ji’s resolution from the ancient time and practice “Farming Teaching” in modern way; we persist in close integration of production-learning-research, and have made significant contributions to China’s agricultural modernization and scientific research.

 NWAFU is the only education institution in China that is completely equipped with disciplines of agriculture, forestry, and water science. Currently there are all together 23 colleges (departments, institutes) and Graduate School, covering disciplines of agriculture, science, engineering, economics, business, liberal arts, law, philosophy, history, medicine, education, arts, etc.. The recruitment of undergraduate students has been initiated in 1934 and post-graduate students in 1941. During the past eight decades, more than 130,000 professional talents have stepped out of campus to work home and abroad, among whom 15 have become academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering; they have made outstanding contributions to Northwest area and whole China in world agriculture modernization and rural economic social development.

NWAFU always aims at frontier development of high technology. In accordance with national and regional strategic demands, NWAFU has conducted applied researches in areas of Animal and Plant Breeding, Plant Protection, Agricultural Biology Technology, Agriculture and Irrigation Technology in Dry Areas, and Comprehensive Treatment to Water and Soil Loss in China’s Loess Plateau have developed distinguished features and priorities. NWAFU has acquired more than 5000 accumulated scientific achievements in various areas, among which over 1800 achievements are awarded. Outstanding research accomplishments include“Bima-1”, the most widely planted wheat variety in China, and “Xiaoyan-6”, the leading replacement variety. The university researchers also developed the apple variety “Qinguan”, the most commonly planted apple variety in China. The direct economic benefit of promoting these achievements values over 200 billion RMB.

With “Issues of agriculture, farmer and rural area” as its development theme, NWAFU has always stuck to the practice of close integration of production-learning-research, and has developed from agriculture-oriented to agriculture-oriented-multidisciplinary-coordinated national key university. At present, guided by the new plan and strategy of NWAFU, all faculty and students are working together and striving to realize the goal of “highlighting close integration of production-learning-research, and constructing the world first-level agricultural university”!

Founded in 1934 as the National Northwest College of Agriculture and Forestry, NWAFU is defined with the mission of serving the nation for its needs, serving the people for their living and persisting science for its truth. Historically, the University has contributed significantly to China’s agricultural development, and is grounded in one important task---agricultural research in arid and semi-arid areas. We are currently working collaboratively on the challenging goal of building the University to world-class agricultural university by the year 2034 through our incomparable commitments in food security, food safety,ecological security, and regional development.

Cultivating high-achieving students and striving for academic excellence is NWAFU's core principle and permanent pursuit. With the economy increasingly globalized and diverse cultures progressively integrated, we are committed to the engagement with internationally recognized institutions in a bid to develop students with creative thinking and global perspective. We will work concurrently to help promote the progress of China's agriculture modernization drive, social development and agriculture research in arid areas.

Northwest A&F University is a key national comprehensive university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education. It was established on September 11, 1999 by merging seven teaching and scientific research institutions in Yangling, Shaanxi Province, namely Northwest Agricultural University, Northwest Forestry College, Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Northwest Institute of Water Resources Science, Shaanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shaanxi Provincial Academy of Forestry, and Northwest Institute of Botany. The university is jointly constructed and administrated by both Ministry of Education and Shaanxi province, with major issues managed by the Ministry of Education and routine business by the Shaanxi Provincial government. In June, 2004, the university was among the second group universities in “Project 985”, a national project aiming at developing Chinese universities into world-class institutes of higher learning. The history of the university dates back to the National Northwest Junior College of Agriculture and Forestry, which was founded in 1934 by Mr. Yu Youren, a senior official of the Kuomingtang.

Northwest Agricultural University originated from the National Northwest Junior College of Agriculture and Forestry, which was founded in 1934. In 1938, the Junior College merged with the Agricultural College of the National Northwest Associated University and the Animal Husbandry Department of the Agricultural College of Henan University, to form the National Agricultural College. The college was renamed as Northwest Agricultural University after the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. With the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fishery, the university was renamed as Northwest Agricultural University in 1985. It merged with other research and education institutions to form Northwest A&F University in September, 1999.

Northwest Forestry College, originated from the Forestry Department which was founded in 1934 as one of the department in the Northwest Agricultural College, was established in 1979 as an independent institution under the authority of both Ministry of Forestry and the Shaanxi Provincial government. The Ministry of Forestry had the greater responsibility for the management of the College. Northwest Forestry College became part of Northwest A&F University in September, 1999.

  Institute of Soil and Water Conservation of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Ministry of Water Resource originated from the Northwest Agricultural Biological Institute, which was established in Wugong County, Shaanxi Province in 1954. The institute undertook a series of name changes beginning with the Chinese Academy of Science’s Northwest Agricultural Biological Institute in 1955, followed by the Northwest Institute of Biological Soil Research, the Northwest Biological Soil Research Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, the Chinese Academy of Science’s Northwest Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, the Chinese Academy of Science and Ministry of Water Resource’s Northwest Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, and finally the Ministry of Water Resource’s Institute of Soil and Water Conservation in 1995. The institute was identified as one of the research institutes for the “Knowledge and Innovation Project” under the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1998 and became a part of Northwest A&F University in September, 1999.

 Northwest Institute of Water Resources of Ministry of Water Resource dates back to the Wugong Hydraulic Engineering Research Laboratory, which was taken over by Northwest Agricultural College and the Central Hydraulic Engineering Institute in 1940. It was included as part of the Northwest Hydraulic Research Institute in 1952 and successively renamed as the Northwest Water Science Institute, the Shaanxi Provincial Hydraulic Research Institute, the Northwest Water Science Institute of the Ministry of Water Resources, the Shaanxi Province Hydraulic Research Institute, and the Northwest Hydraulic Research Institute of Ministry of Water Resources. The Institute merged with other research and education institutions to form Northwest A&F University in September, 1999.

The Shaanxi Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, formally known as the Northwest Institute of Agricultural Science, was founded by the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, Northwest Military-Political Committee in 1952. It was governed by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1954 and co-administrated by the Chinese Academy of Agriculture and the Shaanxi Provincial Bureau of Agriculture and Forestry. It was renamed as the Chinese Academy of Agriculture’s Shaanxi Branch in 1958. In 1973, it was renamed as the Shaanxi Provincial Academy of Agriculture and Forestry under the jurisdiction of the Shaanxi Provincial Bureau of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. t became the Shaanxi Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1983 and merged into Northwest A&F University in September, 1999.

 The Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Forestry was founded in 1958 as a specialized institute under the Shaanxi Branch of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In 1980, it was established as a independent institute under the authority of the Shaanxi Provincial Forestry Bureau. It was renamed as the Shaanxi Provincial Academy of Forestry in 1998 and then it joined Northwest A&F University in September 1999.

The Northwest Institute of Botany was part of the Shaanxi Provincial Branch of the Chinese Academy of Science. The Institute originated from the Northwest Institute of Botany, a comprehensive professional botany research institution established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1965. The Shaanxi Provincial government became responsible for it’s administration in July 1970. The institute was renamed as the Northwest Institute of Botany in 1982 and then the Shaanxi Province Northwest Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991jointlt administratedby both Chinese Academy of Science and Shaanxi Province. In September 1999 it became a part of Northwest A & F University.

The College of Agronomy is one of the oldest colleges in the Northwest A&F University. The undergraduate students have been enrolled since 1936, and graduate students enrolled since 1960.

The college has three undergraduate programs, including Agronomy, Plant Science and Technology, and Seed Science and Technology. There are five disciplines authorized master degree in Crop Cultivation and Farming System, Crop Genetics and Breeding, Plant Resources, Seed Engineering, and Agricultural Extension; four disciplines authorized doctoral degree in Crop Cultivation and Farming System, Crop Genetics and Breeding, Plant Resources, and Seed Engineering; and a postdoctoral research station for the Crop Discipline. Crop Genetics and Breeding is a national priority (cultivating) discipline, and Crop Cultivation and Farming System is a priority discipline in Shaanxi province.

The college has 19 sci-tech innovation platforms on national, ministerial / provincial, and university level, such as State Key Laboratory of Crop Stress Biology for Arid Areas (co-established), Yangling Breeding & Agro- biotechnology Center, Yangling Branch of China Wheat Improvement Center, Yangling Branch of China Maize Improvement Center, Wheat Breeding Engineering Research Center in Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Crop Eco-physiology and Farming System in Northwest Loess Plateau (Ministry of Agriculture), Key Laboratory of Wheat Biology, Genetics and Breeding in Northwest Areas (Ministry of Agriculture), Key Laboratory of Maize Biology, Genetics and Breeding in Northwest Arid Areas (Ministry of Agriculture), Shaanxi Scientific Observation and Experiment Station for Crop Genetic Resources and Germplasm Innovation (Ministry of Agriculture), Shaanxi Provincial Laboratory of Plant Genetics and Breeding, Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Crop Heterosis Research and Utilization, Shaanxi Provincial Research Center for Recycling Agricultural Engineering Technology, Shaanxi Provincial Wheat Engineering Technology Research Center, Shaanxi Provincial Wheat Variety-development Engineering Research Center, Shaanxi Provincial Maize Engineering Technology Research Center, Minor Grain and Bean Research Center, Rape Research Center, Crop Cultivation Research Center, and Wheat Research Center. The college has one campus base and 12 extramural bases for practice education, hosting two academic journals, Acta Agriculturae Boreali-Occidentalis Sinica and Journal of Triticeae Crops, and also sponsoring Shaanxi Society of Crop Sciences and Shaanxi Society of Genetics.

There are 120 full time teachers among the 223 staff members, including 40 professors/senior researchers and 80 associate professors/junior researchers,26 supervisors for doctoral students, 49 supervisors for master students.102 staffs have doctoral degree,and  46 staffs have master degree  : Among of them, there are one recipient of "National Outstanding Youth Fund", one elected “One-hundred Program” and one nominated as “SanQin Scholars” in Shaanxi ; Three are supported by New Century Talents Program sponsored by Ministry of Education, and eight won supports from provincial “Three-Five Talent Project”; one expert won the national award for outstanding contributions and five provincial wards for outstanding contributions.

Currently, there are totally 1307 registered students, including 798 undergraduate students, 373 master candidates and 136 doctoral candidates. During the past 80 years, 14,589 students graduated from the college.  Among  them,there are many outstanding representatives , such as  Zhao Hongzhang, the renowned wheat breeding expert and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Shen Yuqing, the founder of Agricultural Zoning in China, Lu Ming, the former Vice Minister of Ministry of Agriculture, Zhu Jingzhi, vice director of the People's Congress of Shaanxi Province, and Wang Hui, winner of the Highest Achievement Award of Science and Technology in Shaanxi province.,and so on。

The college conducts scientific innovation and sci-tech popularization focusing on national and regional strategic needs. During the four rotations of wheat varieties in Yellow and Huai River Valleys, four of six dominant varieties were bred by the college staff. In 1950’s, wheat variety, Bima 1 developed by academician Zhao Hongzhang, was planted in the areas up to 90 million mu (six million hectare), ranking the first record in planting area for single variety in China. In 1980’s, a series of Xiaoyan wheat varieties, developed by academician Li Zhensheng, were extended to the area of accumulative total 400 million mu (near to 27 million hectare), which won the first prize of the National Technology Invention. In 1990’s, Shaannong 7859 wheat variety, developed by researcher Nin Kun, won the first prize of State Sci-technological Progress Award. In the research field of distant hybridization and chromosome engineering, the college keeps in the academic frontier. During three rotations of Maize varieties in Shaanxi province, researcher Lin Jizhou, one of earlier agronomists of using single hybrids in Maize breeding, developed >20 Maize hybrids named in the series of Wu and Shaan. Researcher Yu Qibao founded the disease nursery breeding procedure for cotton, which had an important impact on cotton breeding. Recently, well progress was made in wheat hybrid development.  

The college persists in characteristic of integrating teaching with production and research and strengthens the ability of serving agriculture, rural area and farmers. Now the college is actively strengthening popularization of crop varieties approved by national and provincial crops variety examination and approval committee. Wheat elite varieties, represented by Xinong 979 and Xiaoyan 22, are being popularized in wheat areas of Shaanxi and Huang- Huai River valleys. Rape hybrid varieties, represented by Qinyan 211, is being planted in the middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang River basin. Nowadays, 20 demonstration stations have been established in Huang-Huai wheat area. Through indefatigable efforts, wheat variety Xinong 979 is planted annually in the area of more than seven million mu (near to 470 thousand hectare), and ranking the sixth dominant wheat variety in China and the third dominant variety in Henan province. Since 2008, wheat varieties developed by the college experts has popularized in the area of 26 million 000,000 mu (near to 1.7 million hectare), and gained 5.85 billion kg grains, which yielding a profit of 7.8 billion yuan RMB for wheat growers, with the indirect benefit of more than 30 billion yuan RMB.

Based on the strategy of strengthening talents, dominated by academic disciplines, and integrating teaching with production and research, the college is enhancing the traditional subjects by means of actively strengthening the development of disciplinary intersections between biotechnology, information technology, agricultural engineering technology and traditional disciplines, and working for top agronomy discipline characterized by arid agronomy in the world.
